Meditation 6 "Mind and Body"

"But I had sometimes heard it said by people whose leg or arm had been amputated that it seemed to them that they still occasionally sensed pain in the very limb they had lost." -(Descartes 95)

I think this goes back to whether are we a mind, brain or both. In my psychology class I learned that Descartes believed in Dualism. A Dualist is believing that we have a mind and brain and they work together. I think when people lose limbs, their brain thinks there should be something there but your mind knows that there isn't. The brain senses something is wrong and that is where the pain comes from.

I happen to think that this passage is right on point. I feel like he wants to believe the body is one with the mind.

"I think this goes back to........where the pain comes from."

Honestly, that was exactly what I was thinking minus the psychology reference. Wow!

Wow i have to agree with the comments. In this part Decartes finally is starting to make sense. Liek someone says what your mind is thinking it leads to your brain. They basically both work together.

I have to agree with all the other comments that were made. I think that the mind is used to performing functions with that limb that even when its first taken away it still thinks its there even tho we know its not. You definitely made a good point and when i read it I was like wow that is so true.
